Certificates Required

All the certificates highlighted below are covered by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978, and amended in 1995. (The STCW Code). Section A-VI details the mandatory minimum requirements for familiarisation and basic safety training for seafarers.

On successful completion of any of the following courses an MCA approved certificate will be issued.

BASIC SEA SURVIVAL (PST) - 1 day

The aim of the course is to give all seafarers the essential basic knowledge and experience of Personal Survival Techniques and principals that can be applied to maximise their chances of survival in the event of a marine casualty.

The course will commence in the morning with theory in the classroom and then move to the swimming pool in the afternoon for the wet drill. The pool will be specially equipped with a jumping platform, emergency alarms, water spray and sound and lighting effects in order to enhance the realism of the procedures undertaken.

For the wet drill exercise you should provide a clean boiler suit or some out door clothing, i.e. sweatshirt, tracksuit bottoms or light trousers, along with your own towel. Swimming costumes or trunks should be worn under the clothing. Lifejackets will be worn throughout the drill and therefore all parts of the exercise are capable of being accomplished by non-swimmers.

The course is to be assessed in three ways. The wet drill will be assessed with regards to the practical nature of the exercises. Oral assessments will take place throughout the duration of the course. A written / oral multiple choice test will be held at the end of the theory.
